LCMC’s Tree Drive Puts Kids at the Heart of Climate Action

By Ms. Teresia Muia

The Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC) has once again demonstrated its commitment to environmental advocacy by placing children at the center of Kenya’s green revolution. On July 10, 2025, LCMC led a successful tree planting exercise under its Plant4Tomorrow campaign at Lenana Grounds, along the Kirichwa Ndogo River in Nairobi.

The event brought together over 165 participants, including enthusiastic pupils from St. Bhakita Primary School, Edmund Rice Primary School, and Edmund Rice High School, alongside community members and environmental groups. In total, 1,000 tree seedlings were planted, directly contributing to Kenya’s national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Working in collaboration with the Green Army of Nairobi County and Climate Works youth, the participants engaged in hands-on planting activities. The exercise included practical demonstrations and the use of traditional fencing techniques to protect the young trees and ensure sustainability.

Key institutions present included the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD), Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Nairobi County Environment Office, and St. Paul’s Chapel – University of Nairobi, all lending their support to the cause.

The tree planting drive forms part of LCMC’s wider project on Rooting for Children’s Ecological Rights, which aligns with UN General Comment No. 26, a global framework advocating for the active participation of children in environmental protection.
