Safeguarding Reinforced at Jesuit Development Office

By Edward Musungu

In a decisive move to bolster the protection of vulnerable individuals, the Jesuit Development Office hosted an intensive one-day safeguarding training on August 15 at the office premises in Kangemi, facilitated by Fr. Silus K. Kipkorir, SJ. The session aimed to empower staff with critical knowledge and practical skills necessary to cultivate a safe and respectful environment, with a focus on children and vulnerable adults.

Central to the training was an in-depth understanding of the Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Officer’s (CVAPO) role, alongside the correct reporting protocols and the importance of confidentiality and good faith reporting. The Staff also engaged with the AOR’s Policy on Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH), which underscores the organization’s zero-tolerance stance on safeguarding breaches.

Fr. Kipkorir introduced the practical “4 Rs” framework; Recognize, Respond, Report and Record offering a clear, actionable guide for managing safeguarding concerns effectively. The training emphasized that safeguarding is a shared responsibility, encouraging all staff to conduct regular self-audits and actively contribute to a strong safeguarding culture.

Looking ahead, the AOR Jesuit Development Office is committed to ongoing refresher sessions and fostering open dialogue to maintain vigilance and ensure the well-being of those they serve.
