Moments of Grace and Hope in Maban

By Yully Massae, SJ

Over the past two weeks, St Mark’s Parish and the wider Maban community have experienced a time of spiritual enrichment and renewed hope.

We were honoured by the visit of Bishop Tombe Trille, Bishop of El Obeid Diocese, Sudan. Bishop Trille came to console the family of Abuna Luka, a priest of his diocese who tragically lost his life in a recent bomb attack in Sudan. His presence was a significant sign of solidarity and support for the bereaved community. Bishop Tombe also celebrated Sunday Mass at St Mark’s Parish on the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, which made the feast properly honored.

Additionally, we welcomed Abuna Chris from Solidarity for South Sudan (Juba), who is leading a three-week series of workshops for the Parish Council, Youth, Small Christian Community, and Catechists. Deacon Michael later joined him from the Diocese of Malakal. These workshops provide valuable formation and strengthen the faith of parishioners.

Last Sunday, we celebrated a special Thanksgiving Mass with Abuna Matthew Ippel SJ from the USA Midwest Province. Abuna Matthew, who served his regency in Maban from 2019 to 2021, returned after his ordination of 14 June to express gratitude and reconnect with the community. In his heartfelt homily, he shared stories from his time in Maban, describing them as pivotal in shaping his vocation to the priesthood and the Society of Jesus. His return brought great joy and inspiration to parishioners and friends in the camp.

Meanwhile, JRS continues its essential programmes in Maban, though future funding remains uncertain. We ask for prayers for the sustainability of JRS’s work and for the generosity of donors, whose support is vital for serving those in need.
