It is good to be here! St. Theresa-Rumbek is 20!
By Fr. Silas Kemboi, SJ
This year, I was fortunate to visit South Sudan — the only country in our province with apostolic works where I had not yet served. Since it was my first time, I decided to stay longer. To make the visit even more special, I chose to have my annual retreat in Rumbek. Although the retreat house is still under construction, it has potential of being a popular destination for retreatants. If the opportunity arises, please come and experience the warmth of the people of Lakes State and the Jesuit companions here.
My retreat ended just a day before the celebration. On October 5th, our parish, St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, celebrated its feast day and marked 20 years of existence. The parish was the first Jesuit apostolate in the Diocese of Rumbek, with Abuna Salvatore Farrao and Joe Rodriguez serving as the first pastors.
You could tell that the celebration had been long anticipated. The beautiful voices of the choir serenaded my prayers throughout. The highlight came on the eve of the feast, when the youth held a lively vigil filled with singing and dancing.
The main celebration began with a grand procession, led by the choir and liturgical dancers dressed for the occasion. The Mass was presided over by Abuna John Malou, the Apostolic Delegate of the Diocese of Rumbek. During the celebration, ten catechumens received the sacrament of confirmation.
Although the Church has been present here for many years, the number of Christians remains relatively small. There is, I believe, a strong need for primary evangelization. From what I observed, the church is largely made up of children and youth, with only a few adults and elders. Still, I am deeply impressed by the dedication and creativity of my companions in their mission. It is good to be here!
