Finding God in All Things: Towards Ethics Aware AI Solutions
By Mukulu John Francis, SJ
This past month, I had the opportunity to participate in a competition related to my research on Ethical Intelligence in Machine Learning. It was a very competitive scholarship competition held at Sophia University. I thank God for the recognition of my research work as the first winner and recipient of this year’s scholarship. It was a clear moment of consolation and confirmation of this research path in AI ethics.
My research at Sophia University seeks to integrate ethics into the Machine Learning workflow. The goal is to have systems designed not only for efficiency, but with accountability and care for the vulnerable. In the light of the Spiritual Exercises, I often return to the grace “to find God in all things” – even in models and algorithms that silently shape society.
For me, as a Jesuit in formation, this scholarship is not just personal recognition; it is a mission mandate. The words of our Lord Jesus Christ to row into the deep echo strongly in this context. The “deep” of our times includes digital oceans riddled with algorithmic currents. Amidst all this, we have to usher the Kingdom of God into the current and upcoming generation. I’m indeed grateful to God Most High and everyone involved in these initiatives.
May the Lord continue to send labourers in his vineyard for the greater love and service in his Kingdom.
