Celebration of Father Joseph Oduor Afulo’s Silver Jubilee of Priesthood

The celebration of Father Joseph Afulo’s Silver Jubilee on December 22, 2025 took place at Mzee Afulo’s compound, which as from December 13, 2024 became the St. Aloysius Jesuit Retreat Centre. This beautiful setting provided a serene backdrop for a significant occasion, bathed in warm December sunshine as guests arrived from around the globe. The atmosphere buzzed with joy and anticipation as family, friends, and clergy gathered to honor Father Afulo, a beloved figure in their community.
Among the notable attendees was the Right Reverend Mark Kadima, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma, whose presence underscored the event’s importance as the main celebrant. He was joined by Monsignor Vincent Odundo, the Auxiliary Bishop-Elect of Kisumu Archdiocese, bringing blessings and good wishes to Father Afulo on this significant milestone. Their participation emphasized the respect and admiration for Father Afulo, highlighting the unity within the Church.
Fr. Kizito Kiyimba, Provincial of the Jesuit Province of Eastern Africa, was also present, adding to the occasion’s honor. The Jesuits, along with priests from various dioceses, gathered to show their support, representing a network of faith and service that has enriched the Church’s mission in the region and beyond. This diverse assembly of religious men and women showcased the vibrant tapestry of faith that Father Afulo has nurtured over his 25 years of dedicated service.

As evening descended upon the St. Aloysius Retreat Centre, the vibrancy of the day continued to fill the air. Guests mingled amidst shouts of joy when Most Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu, made a special entrance. He had faced unforeseen circumstances earlier, preventing his attendance during the day, but prioritized joining the festivities in the evening.
Once present, he addressed the congregation with humility, expressing sincere apologies for his earlier absence and sharing heartfelt blessings for Father Afulo. The joy and unity surrounding the Silver Jubilee celebration reflected the understanding among all present of God’s palpable presence in the service of His people, making it a memorable tribute to a remarkable journey of faith.
