Greetings from Chennai, India, where the weather has recently undergone a significant transformation. Just a few days ago, scorching heat had everyone seeking shade and relief. Now, thanks to the timely arrival of the monsoon rains, temperatures have cooled considerably. The city is now enjoying the refreshing touch of rain after a hot spell.
On June 13th 2024, a farewell mass was held at Berchmans Illam community. The mass was a heartfelt occasion to bid farewell to the outgoing Superior, Fr. A. Irudaraj SJ, and to extend a warm welcome to the new Superior, Fr. Sahayaraj Vijayan, SJ. In his welcoming speech, the incoming superior graciously accepted his new mission. He expressed happiness in returning to the place that shaped him and helped him discover himself. He emphasized the pleasure of working with youngsters and returning to his educational and formative roots. Despite feeling unworthy of the responsibility, he looks forward to a hopeful future with the scholastics and thanked the outgoing superior for his tremendous work and stewardship.
Fr. A. Irudaraj, SJ, the outgoing superior, expressed his pleasure in working in this community for six years, including five years as a member and one year as superior. He highlighted his journey of learning and mutual appreciation with the community and interaction with the scholastics, which facilitated his work. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the Minister, sub-minister, and all the scholastics in the community. He congratulated everyone and handed over the office of superior to the new upcoming superior, Fr. Sahayaraj Vijayan, SJ, as he prepares to embark on his new mission. He wished the new superior all the best and symbolically passed on to him the key to the tabernacle, signifying guidance for the scholastics.
In another update, just a day before the reopening of the college on June 19th for its second and third-year undergraduate students, as well as second-year postgraduate students, a special Mass was held at Berchmans Illam on June 18th. During this gathering, the new Superior addressed the community, welcoming the new scholastics into the fold and offering his best wishes to those embarking on their academic journey. This year, the Berchmans Illam community is blessed to have received 19 scholastics, increasing the number of the community members to 51 Jesuits. The superior finally encouraged all the residents of Berchmans Illam to make the most of their time in the community.
Looking ahead, this year, Loyola College Chennai is gearing up for a unique academic year as it celebrates its centenary. Preparations are in full swing with painting renovations across the campus, including the college chapel and several departments. It’s an exciting time for the college community as they prepare to commemorate a century of educational excellence.
