Galilee Centre – Debre Zeit, Ethiopia
Galilee Centre located in Debre Zeit was established in 1975. The Centre is on the edge of a beautiful crater lake facing a magnificent mountain. Its surroundings are inviting and very conducive to silence, study, and reflection. Galilee’s location in the geographical centre of the country and its vicinity to the capital makes it an easy meeting point for pastoral agents coming from different regions of the country.
Galilee Centre is guided by the vision of justice, peace, and dialogue with cultures, other Churches, and religions. Being the only institution of its kind in Ethiopia, Galilee Centre offers programs oriented to fostering pastoral, spiritual, human, and social growth in the spirit of the African Synod. Its essential purpose is to serve the Catholic Church through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius offered in different forms. The Centre is run in collaboration with the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Sisters, who oversee the daily administration. Although it is canonically dependent on the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa, the Centre is considered by the Bishops of Ethiopia as a national Catholic institution at the service of the whole Church in the country.
