Initiative for Menstrual Hygiene and Dignity in Kangemi Slum
By Edward Musungu

Amidst the struggles inherent to life in Kangemi Slum, where hope can be scarce amidst adversity, adolescent girls confront formidable barriers to maintaining menstrual hygiene. The absence of clean and affordable toilet facilities at home and school amplifies their worries, while financial constraints prevent many from affording essential sanitary towels. Tragically, some resort to desperate measures, such as offering sexual favors, to obtain the funds necessary for menstrual hygiene. Others simply skip school.

On Tuesday, 26th March, a beacon of hope emerged at Kangemi Primary and Junior Secondary School, orchestrated by the Jesuit Development Office (JDO). A sanitary and innerwear distribution drive for the economically challenged pupils in the school was led by Ms. Damaris Kamanthe, Programmes Officer and Alexander Masika, Communication Officer, that aimed to provide crucial support to these pupils.

Under the guidance of Deputy Headteacher Mr. George Ogutu, approximately 261 girls aged 12–14 were beneficiaries of this vital effort. Additionally, 110 adolescent boys from grades 6 to 8 received the much-needed innerwear.

This compassionate endeavor, made possible through the generous support of Irish Jesuit International (IJI), which seeks to alleviate immediate challenges and foster sustainable change within the community.

While celebrating this significant milestone, it’s crucial to acknowledge the ongoing work to address systemic issues. By fostering inclusivity and support through collaborative efforts, the Jesuit Development Office (JDO) aims to pave the way toward a more equitable and dignified society for the nearby Kangemi residents.

Looking ahead, the JDO remains committed to engaging the community and implementing long-term solutions, which include providing education on menstrual health, promoting gender sensitivity among students, and advocating for improved infrastructure and resources. Through continued partnership and dedication, we can ensure such initiatives provide lasting positive change in Kangemi and beyond.
