Is it true that people are drawn to live near Jesuit apostolates?

By Linus Tigiti, SJ

The answer may vary—yes or no—depending on the lens through which one perceives the Jesuit apostolates and their profound impact on the communities they serve. The true power of the Jesuits lies not merely in the structures we build, but in the quiet, profound transformation we inspire within the hearts of the people. In places like Arusha, Tanzania, where a Jesuit Novitiate is located —once a remote forest—the Jesuits turned barren land into a thriving center of learning and opportunity. The Jesuits, alongside others, bring more than just education; they bring hope to areas others might overlook.

In Bonga, Ethiopia, a new Jesuit school rises, and with it, the government is relocating people to the area. What was once isolated is now becoming a community full of potential. The Jesuits offer more than infrastructure; we offer a vision of transformation that nurtures the soul. Their presence reminds everyone that change is possible anywhere, and where Jesuits go, they do more than shape the land—they inspire growth in the hearts of those they touch. The Jesuits call everyone to be part of something greater, something filled with hope and purpose.

Surveying the land for the school's sports field

In every thriving school community, there comes a moment when the rhythm of intense learning is balanced by the need for physical movement and activity. As construction of the new Jesuit school progresses, the Jesuits and the construction team gathered to discuss a critical element: the development of a sports field. The land, once covered by thick, intimidating bush, was carefully surveyed in line with the master plan. Though it appeared daunting, the use of machinery promised to simplify the process. This day marked a significant turning point, where decisions were made based on the land’s topography. The ultimate goal is clear: when the school opens its doors, the sports field will be ready, ensuring the school’s activities flow smoothly.

Construction of the G+1 and G+0 classrooms

This week marks a pivotal moment in the journey of transformation, as the surveying for the foundation of new buildings progresses with purpose. Each step taken, gathering vital data, is a testament to the vision that will reshape the future of this school. As the excavation begins for two new buildings, there is a shared hope that nothing will halt the momentum—especially the rain, which could slow the work. It’s more than construction; it’s the promise of new opportunities, a place where countless students will soon thrive. Every measure taken now lays the groundwork for an inspiring future.
