The construction of the house is nearing completion, and there is optimism that the contractor will soon turn over the project to the Jesuits. Currently, the remaining tasks include installing doors and fittings. While these tasks are ongoing, workers are occupied with painting the external walls, fence work, and installing aluminum windows.

Rising from the Heart

In the heart of Bonga, a dream was unfolding. On May 13 and 14, 2024, Fr. Provincial embarked on a journey to witness the realization of a long-held vision – the construction of the Jesuit Community house. As he stepped onto the site, he was met with a sense of awe and wonder. The edifice, now 90% complete, stood tall, its walls bearing witness to the tireless efforts of the workers and the local community. He saw the chapel, where prayers would rise like incense, and the dining hall, where laughter and stories would be shared. Every brick, every beam, seemed to whisper tales of hope and redemption. As he met with the workers, Father Provincial was struck by their dedication and perseverance. He saw in them the same spirit that had driven the Jesuits for centuries – a spirit of selflessness, compassion, and service. In their faces, he saw the faces of the people they would soon serve, and his heart swelled with gratitude.

Perseverance in the Rain

After heavy rain on May 13-14, 2024, the bushwalk to the Jesuit Community house construction site posed challenges. Flooded with loam soil and slippery conditions required caution to avoid falls and injuries. Hikers adapted by wearing proper rain gear, staying hydrated, and maintaining a positive attitude. Despite the wet weather, the group persevered, determined to reach their destination and witness the progress of the nearly completed house, a testament to their resilience and commitment to the Jesuit mission in Eastern Africa.

Surveying the Site

Architect Haile, from the consultant’s head office, led a survey of the site for the new school construction in Bonga. During the visit on May 14, 2024, Haile explained the planned buildings to Father Provincial, detailing the layout and features of the future school. The survey aimed to ensure the site was suitable for the project and that all stakeholders were informed of the construction plans.

Roots of Unity: A Tree-Planting Ceremony at the Jesuit Community House

As the Jesuit Community house neared completion, Fr. Provincial led a symbolic tree-planting ceremony on May 14, 2024. The entire community, including the contractor and consultant, came together to plant trees, symbolizing growth, harmony, and unity. The event was a sweet experience, marking a new chapter in the community’s history and fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among all involved.
