LCMC and Gen-Z
By Fr.Odomaro Mubangizi, SJ

The talk of the town in Kenya over the past few weeks has been Gen-Z, and one who was not left behind in this talk was none other than Fr. Kizito Kiyimba, our Provincial. Among his many remarks was the following with which he hailed Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC): “Now we see the deep work and the urgency of recent LCMC work: youth, social media, resilience training, and the social cancer of corruption. Thanks, LCMC. You have a leading role to play.”

The PHU from the Perspective of LAP

Meanwhile the PHU held a successful fundraiser at HIPSIR premises on Thursday 21 July, 2024. Over 70 guests graced the colourful friends- and funds-raising event. Fr. Kizito Kiyimba, SJ, Provincial of AOR graced the occasion, that was attended by dignitaries and VIPs that included, among others: The Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya H.E. Evans Aryabaha, Prof. Noah Mindimba, a renown academic and motivational speaker, former Deputy Governor of Kiambu–brother to Mr Peter Wairegi (co- chair of PHU Steering Committee on Fundraising), and representatives from industries and academic institutions. The guests were treated to an Afrobit live band.

Fr. Kizito highlighted the importance of relevancy of higher education in a restive region of East Africa and the Horn of Africa. He also explained to the guests who Jesuits are and what they do. Some of the non-Catholic guests were intrigued by Fr. Kizito’s elaboration on vows of poverty, obedience and chastity. H. E. the High Commissioner of Uganda emphasized the importance of continuous learning quoting several thinkers, and inspired guests by his example that he is doing higher studies as well. He pledged to support the PHU after giving a handsome donation. He also lauded the role of universities in promoting regional integration.

Dr. Mokua, in his capacity as Proposed VC of PHU, outlined the progress made so far and explained the necessity of grounding higher education in digital technology, especially AI, if Africa is to address the current challenges facing the continent. He emphasized how the PHU is a regional university, hence the great importance attached to the presence of H.E. the High Commissioner of Uganda to Kenya.

The distinguished guests were treated to a delicious and sumptuous meal under the able supervision by Mr. Brian, our cook at Loyola. To add to the joy of the event, two companies that deal with beverages had offered their services – choicest wines and beers were available for sale, and a small percentage of the sales would go to the PHU. There were raffles too. A number of Jesuits won some prizes. The next Fundraiser is scheduled for November 2024. The Advancement Office under the able leadership of Fr. Endashaw did an excellent job in planning this fundraiser through several meetings and mobilization in collaboration with the PHU Directorate.
