Loyola Bids Farewell to a Pillar of Service: Fr. Didmus Shirima, SJ Sets Out for New Chapters

By Adolphe Mudekereza, SJ

On Thursday, January 30, 2025, the Loyola Jesuit community gathered to bid a heartfelt farewell to one of its members, Fr. Didmus Shirima, SJ. Fr. Shirima is moving on to a new mission that begins with an internship at Radio Kwizera, following the completion of his studies in Media Studies, and will later take him to Ghana for his tertianship.

The farewell began with a social gathering in the community, setting the tone for an evening filled with gratitude and fraternal joy. This was followed by a dinner, during which Fr. Shirima expressed his deep appreciation to all his companions at Loyola. In his message of gratitude, he reflected on the shared journey in community life, acknowledging the spiritual and professional collaboration that has defined his time at Loyola.

Fr. Binamungu, SJ took the opportunity to address the gathering with words of gratitude for Fr. Shirima’s vibrant and life-giving presence in the community. He thanked him for his availability and willingness to assist anyone in need, as well as for his energy, enthusiasm, and zeal in fostering vocations in the Eastern Africa Province.

Particular mention was made of Fr. Shirima’s contributions as Vice-Minister (in the past) and head of the Loyola garden. His efforts brought a special touch to the community, most notably through the creation of the beautiful fishpond. Fr. Binamungu, SJ also highlighted Fr. Shirima’s lasting impact on the community, acknowledging that his legacy will remain indelible.

The community superior, Fr. Francis Anyanzu, SJ, joined Fr. Binamungu, SJ in wishing Fr. Shirima, SJ all the best as he embarks on his new roles, both in Ngara and later in Ghana. Known affectionately as the “Recruitment and Aptitude Assessment Officer” within the community and the Society of Jesus, Fr. Shirima, SJ leaves behind an inspiring example of service and dedication.

The evening concluded in a festive yet fraternal atmosphere, made even more special by the presence of two novices from Arusha who are currently in Nairobi for their experiments.

Fr. Shirima’s departure marks not the end of a chapter in Loyola community but the beginning of a new mission. The Loyola community members will surely miss him, but their prayers and support go with him as he continues his journey in service to God and the Society of Jesus.
