Members of the Kenya Society of Care Leavers (KESCA) express their gratitude to SOS Children’s Villages and the Jesuits in collaboration with Loyola Center for Media and Communications (LCMC) for embracing and supporting them through a training on sustainable leadership in 2023.

During a one on one interview conducted by the LCMC team, the care leavers were profoundly appreciative towards SOS Children’s Villages for their generous funding and the Jesuit community for offering this transformative training opportunity. They emphasized how this program has equipped them with essential skills, enabling them to emerge as effective leaders in their communities.

Nyawira, a care leaver serving as a social worker in a care reform program in Korogocho, shared her insights gained from the training and how delighted she is to practice them. “Thanks to the training on communication skills I understand how to engage the people I work with, how to carry myself around others even in the slums, I take the people slow by slow even when they are resisting, I try another time to engage them,” Says Nyawira. Her dedication to understanding and connecting with her community reflects the profound impact of the training on her professional approach.

Despite the challenges these young care leavers meet in their daily interactions, Benard Mwololo ; a data clerk who is also a care leaver says that he is trying his best to transfer the skills to his team mates so that soon the communication in their work place will be more effective.

Pointing out to the current economic hardships in the country, Mwololo said that they are looking forward to more trainings especially on entrepreneurship skills so that they can be prepared to face any possible hardship in the future.  “I just need something that I can do in case I lose my job because looking at our country right now getting a job is so hard.”
