Women Collaborating with Men in Ministry
Recently, LCMC was invited to facilitate a session on the topic “Women Collaborating with Men in Ministry,” for the brothers of St. Vincent DePaul. The session proved to be a dynamic and participative one as participants openly shared their hopes and fears surrounding this crucial aspect of collaborative ministry.
The session began with an exploration of the historical context and evolution of gender dynamics within ministry, setting the stage for a contemporary understanding of the roles women play alongside their male counterparts. Biblical and Theological Principles were also discussed. Sr. Santrina, who facilitated the session, emphasized the importance of inclusive collaboration, recognizing the unique strengths and perspectives that both men and women bring to the ministry; “Even if you are looking for a Catechist, first, define the kind of person you need in terms of qualities before looking at the gender” she said. The heart of the session unfolded through a series of interactive dialogues. Small group discussions allowed participants to share personal experiences, hopes, and apprehensions. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect, fostering an environment where diverse viewpoints were acknowledged and valued.
Conversely, fears were candidly discussed, ranging from concerns about resistance to change within established structures to worries about potential misunderstandings and miscommunications. However, the session emphasized that addressing these fears head-on could pave the way for stronger, more resilient collaborations.
Key Takeaways included recognition of diverse gifts, the importance of open and honest communication, and empowering leadership which includes creating opportunities for shared decision-making and responsibilities. The session underscored the transformative potential of women collaborating with men in ministry and highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue and action.
