LCMC Empowers Catholic Media with Artificial Intelligence Training
By Ms. Teresia Muia
In a bold move to stay ahead of technological advancements, the Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC) recently hosted an intensive session on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into daily media operations. Held at the Pauline Sisters’ Bookshop in West lands, the event drew about 30 media professionals from various Catholic media houses across Nairobi, showcasing LCMC’s commitment to empowering media practitioners with cutting-edge skills.
The session, led by Dr. Elias Mokua, LCMC’s Executive Director, and Teresia Muia, an LCMC staff member, introduced participants to various AI tools for content generation, digital news writing, and production, with a notable emphasis on text generative AI, video animation, and AI-powered YouTube Shorts generation. The media professionals were particularly excited about these tools, which were demonstrated to have significant potential for boosting engagement and expanding audience reach.
After the session, some participants admitted their initial skepticism about incorporating AI into their daily tasks, largely due to concerns over the reliability of machine-generated content, however, they quickly embraced the potential of AI-assisted tools. One participant remarked, “At first, I didn’t like the idea of AI in my daily work, but after this session, I believe it can be really useful if used responsibly.” Addressing these concerns, Dr. Mokua stressed the importance of verifying AI-generated content and humorously cautioned against “AI hallucinations” or inaccuracies.
As the half-day session concluded, participants expressed a desire for more extensive training, feeling inspired and equipped to incorporate AI into their workflows. LCMC plans to continue offering similar empowerment sessions, ensuring that media professionals remain at the forefront of the evolving digital landscape.
This event is part of LCMC’s broader initiative to empower media professionals and content producers with the skills needed to navigate the rapidly changing technological environment.
