LCMC Empowers Catholic Leaders to Lead the Fight Against Corruption
By Ms. Teresia Muia
The Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD) commissioners have pledged to intensify their efforts to combat corruption in their respective dioceses, following a transformative training organized by the Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC). This session, which brought together commissioners from various dioceses and Catholic institutions, emphasized the devastating effects of corruption and the critical role of moral conscience in addressing this national crisis.
The training, led by Dr. Elias Mokua, SJ, Executive Director of LCMC, and Fr. Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, SJ, from the Society of Jesus, highlighted the Church’s vital role in fighting corruption. LCMC’s initiative is not just about raising awareness but about equipping Catholic leaders with the tools and strategies needed to foster accountability and integrity within their communities.
“Corruption is like a spider web that ensnares everything in its path,” Dr. Mokua explained, using this powerful metaphor to underscore the widespread nature of corruption. His words struck a chord with the participants, many of whom recognized the urgent need for the Church to take a more proactive stance in this fight.
Dr. Mokua stressed that the Church has a moral obligation to confront corruption head-on, not merely as an economic issue but as a profound threat to social justice. “Who suffers when corruption occurs? Everyone,” he said, highlighting the far-reaching impact of diverted resources on society’s most vulnerable.
Through this dialogue, LCMC is driving a new wave of consciousness among Catholic leaders, urging them to see corruption as a moral and social challenge that demands immediate and sustained action. The commitment from CJPD commissioners to reignite their anti-corruption efforts is a testament to LCMC’s role as a catalyst for change.
By empowering these leaders, LCMC is setting the stage for a more just and equitable society, demonstrating the Church’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and social integrity.
