Making of Teenage Servant Leaders
By Ms. Teresia Muia
“Effective communication and conflict resolution skills are the core wheels of servant leadership,” said Joy Kesenwa, Programs Manager at Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC). This statement set the tone for an impactful leadership and team-building session held at Mary Ward Centre in Karen on January 18, 2024. The full-day training brought together student leaders from Loreto Msongari and Loreto Valley Road School, equipping them with essential skills to lead effectively.
Facilitators, including Miss Kesenwa and two other LCMC staff members, emphasized the deep connection between communication and leadership. “It is impossible to execute leadership responsibilities or resolve conflicts without effective communication,” Teresia Muia, one of the facilitators.
Ms. Teresia Muia, one of the facilitators, reinforced this by engaging students in real-life conflict scenarios within school settings. Through these exercises, the young leaders gained insights into the power of active listening, open dialogue, inclusivity, empathy, and constructive feedback in fostering a harmonious school environment.
Beyond leadership, Kesenwa reminded the students of their primary role as learners. “As leaders, you must also focus on your studies. Avoid burnout by managing your time wisely. Using a planner to track assignments and leadership tasks can help you stay organized and in control,” she advised.
The session ended on a high note with interactive team-building activities that required students to think creatively, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively. The young leaders expressed their enthusiasm, recognizing the training as a transformative experience.
“Today’s session was so empowering. I have come to appreciate the importance of active listening, allowing open dialogue, and resolving conflicts in a meaningful way,” said Miss Njuguna, Deputy Head Girl of Loreto Valley Road.
Inspired by the model of servant leadership exemplified by Jesus, these student leaders left the session ready to serve their peers with humility, wisdom, and purpose.
