LCMC Youth Apostolate Sets Sail
By Ms. Teresia Muia
In an era where many young people quietly wrestle with doubt, digital noise, and spiritual fatigue, the Youth Apostolate of the Loyola Centre for Media and Communications (LCMC) responds with a bold vision. It aims to intentionally shape resilient ‘desert sailors’ equipped to navigate faith in challenging times.
The recently held Pre-Lent Triduum brought together about 50 young participants for three days of reflection, discernment, and practical spiritual formation.
Day One: themed “When the Well Runs Dry,” was facilitated by Gregory Okumu, SJ, who addressed the often-unspoken reality of spiritual dryness. Drawing from Psalm 63 and the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, he reminded participants that desolation is not failure. Prayer, he emphasized, is friendship with God; a relationship sustained even when emotions fluctuate.
Day Two: Explored the desert as a formative space and was guided by Rev. Fr. Kizito Kiyimba, SJ, Provincial for the Eastern Africa Province of the Society of Jesus. Through reflections on Hosea 2:14–20 and Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness, participants were invited to see hardship as sacred ground; a place where identity is clarified, vocation is discerned, and resilience is forged. Ignatian practices such as the Examen, journaling, scripture reflection, and spiritual companionship were presented as practical tools for navigating life’s wilderness.
The final day: Was guided by Ms. Rosalia Musyoka, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, and focused on Christian hope, consistent daily prayer, healthy digital boundaries, and building authentic Catholic community. Participants were encouraged to start small, remain faithful in simple habits, and support one another through an emerging online faith network.
The outcome of the Triduum was unmistakable: young people are not afraid of the desert; they are ready to journey through it with guidance, tools, and community.
LCMC’s Youth Apostolate is steadily accompanying a generation seeking depth over noise. The initiative continues to provide young people with both a spiritual compass and a supportive crew for the journey ahead.
