A Community's Commitment to Our Common Home
By Ms. Maureen Obare
On the morning of 19th May 2024, the proposed Hekima University (PHU)- Molo campus became a vibrant hub of activity as the community gathered for a noble cause. The PHU team, led by Fr. Dr Christopher Mapunda, SJ embarked on a tree-planting journey in alignment with the teachings of Pope Francis’ encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ – “Care for Our Common Home”, a message that resonates deeply with the university and its partners.
The event was graced by the NCBA Bank, which donated three thousand trees of various species. The contribution being a testament to the bank’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Fr. Melchior Marandu, SJ the chaplain at Ukarimu Retreat Centre, opened the ceremony with heartfelt remarks. “Trees are a carbon sink, they slow down global warming and prevent soil erosion”, he emphasized. His words underscored the critical role trees play in maintaining ecological balance and combating climate change.
Mr. Samuel Mwangi, the branch manager of NCBA Nakuru, stepped forward to underscore the bank’s commitment to environmental stewardship. “We are the generation to change the future and care for our planet,” he stated, adding that while the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second-best time is now. His message was clear: the responsibility to protect our environment rests on all of us, and the time to act is immediate.
The tree-planting event symbolized a powerful unity and commitment to the environment, bringing together the university, NCBA Bank, and the local community. This collaboration marked a significant stride towards a greener, more sustainable future as participants of all ages worked side by side, planting trees that embody hope and resilience.
As the final trees were planted, the air was filled with a shared sense of accomplishment and purpose. The clarion call of the day, “Our greatest responsibility is to be good ancestors,” echoed in the hearts of everyone present. It was a reminder that the actions we take today will shape the world for future generations.
