Empowering East Africa: Chris Lowney's Servant Leadership Workshop at Hekima University
By Ms. Maureen Obare
In the heart of Nairobi’s bustling Riara Road, amidst the quiet serenity of Hekima University’s Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR), an event of transformative significance unfolded. From July 9th to 11th, 2024, Chris Lowney, renowned for his advocacy of Servant Leadership, conducted a three-day workshop that resonated deeply against the backdrop of Kenya’s current leadership challenges and the ongoing GenZ demonstrations.
Gathered within the hall of HIPSIR were participants from diverse sectors from corporate, non-governmental, and religious eager to absorb Lowney’s insights on navigating leadership in a VUCA world. Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, SJ, the proposed Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Student Affairs at the proposed Hekima University, expressed profound gratitude: “This training comes at a unique time for Kenya. We are thrilled to have Chris Lowney here, sharing his profound insights on Servant Leadership.”
Lowney’s workshop wasn’t just a series of lectures; it was a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises designed to internalize the principles of compassionate leadership. Topics ranged from making quality decisions amidst complexity to unlocking human potential through ethical team leadership.
A highlight of the workshop was Fr. Dr. Lawrence Achal Kyaligonza, SJ’s dissertation on Leadership from a Concept of Followership. His insights illuminated the dynamic interplay between leaders and followers, enhancing the participants’ understanding of effective leadership. Reflecting on the impact of the workshop, a participant shared, “this workshop was a game-changer. His approach is inspiring and practical, equipping us with tools that are immediately applicable.”
Buoyed by the success in Nairobi, plans are underway to expand this initiative across East Africa, with upcoming sessions in Tanzania and Uganda next week. This regional effort aims to propagate Servant Leadership principles, fostering a new cadre of leaders committed to ethical governance and community welfare. As East Africa embraces Servant Leadership principles, guided by the collaborative efforts of the proposed Hekima University and Chris Lowney, a promising future emerges, one where leaders navigate challenges with compassion and integrity, poised to lead their communities through an ever-changing world.
On the 23rd July 2024, Chris Lowney is set to launch his book, “Heroic Leadership,” published by Paulines Publications Africa, further cementing his influence in leadership development in Riverside, Nairobi. The book launch, will be a milestone event in celebrating Lowney’s contribution to leadership philosophy in the region.
