Prof. Tad Gonsalves, SJ, Ignites AI Momentum at Proposed Hekima University
By Francis Ogutu

Kenya, known as the “Silicon Savannah,” continues to establish itself as a leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in Africa, despite facing challenges like limited data infrastructure and a shortage of skilled AI professionals. The country’s vibrant tech ecosystem, supported by over 55 tech hubs, is driving AI adoption across various sectors, including healthcare, Agriculture, education, finance, and security. This growth is not just transforming local industries but is also drawing global attention.

In a significant move to bolster AI education and capacity in Kenya, the proposed Hekima University recently hosted Prof. Tad Gonsalves, a renowned expert in Data Science and AI from Sofia University in Japan. On August 10th, 2024, Prof. Gonsalves led an intensive training workshop at Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR) in Nairobi. The following day, he extended his outreach to the Molo community, located four hours from the capital, highlighting the university’s commitment to making AI education accessible even in remote areas.

During these workshops, Prof. Gonsalves provided a comprehensive overview of AI’s evolution, its potential benefits, and the disruptions it may cause in various contexts. He also addressed the challenges posed by current AI tools, which are often developed with a Western-centric approach, questioning how Africa can develop AI solutions that better serve its unique needs.

Participants were actively engaged in discussions, forming groups to explore the benefits and disruptions of AI in the agricultural sector, education, and the ethical implications of AI in society. These conversations highlighted a critical question: Can Africa develop its own AI approaches tailored to the continent’s needs and data context?

The workshops were met with great enthusiasm, with participants expressing a desire for more such educational initiatives. The event not only underscored Kenya’s potential as a leader in AI innovation but also emphasized the need for continued efforts to develop an AI ecosystem that addresses Africa’s specific challenges and opportunities.

Hekima University’s initiative, supported by thought leaders like Prof. Gonsalves, marks a significant step toward empowering Kenya and the broader Eastern African region in the AI landscape. As the region continues to navigate its AI journey, such educational endeavors are crucial in ensuring that the region not only keeps pace with global advancements but also shapes an AI future that is inclusive and beneficial for all.
