AI for Africa, Join the Pioneers Program
By Ms. Maureen Obare
In the heart of Nairobi, a quiet revolution in education is brewing. As Africa stands on the brink of a technological transformation, the proposed Hekima University (PHU), in collaboration with Japan’s Sophia University, is leading the charge with a program that promises to reshape the continent’s future. Come 2025, the innovative COIL Program will bring the study of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Kenya, but with a twist, this isn’t just for tech enthusiasts. This is for everyone!
Recently, a pivotal meeting took place between Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, SJ of PHU Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs (proposed), and Professor Gonsalves Tad from Sophia University Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Information and Communication Sciences. It was more than just a formal discussion but the beginning of a partnership that could define the future of learning in Africa. The focus? COIL is a program that invites students from all walks of life to delve into the world of AI, not just to understand its mechanics but to explore its impact on society.
What sets COIL apart is its approach. The program is set to begin with two foundational classes that introduce the core concepts of AI. But from there, the traditional classroom dynamic is turned on its head. Students are divided into diverse groups, each tasked with a project that will span the semester. They’re not just learning, but they’re creating, collaborating, and applying AI to real-world problems in the education, health, and agriculture sectors. At the end of the semester, they will present their findings, a culmination of weeks of teamwork, critical thinking, and innovation.
What makes this program so compelling is its inclusivity. AI is often seen as the domain of computer scientists and mathematicians, but COIL challenges that notion. It’s open to students from all disciplines because the focus isn’t on the technical details, it’s on the implications, the ethics, and the societal impact of AI. It’s about understanding AI as a tool that will shape our future, and that understanding shouldn’t be limited to a select few.
As PHU and Sophia University move forward with this partnership, there’s a sense of excitement. The COIL Program isn’t just about AI it’s about breaking down barriers, fostering international collaboration, and preparing students for a future where borders are increasingly irrelevant.
Get ready for a groundbreaking adventure in 2025! Why This Program? Be at the forefront of Africa’s AI revolution. As part of our first cohort, you’ll dive into the transformative world of Artificial Intelligence, gaining invaluable insights and skills that will shape the future of the continent.
Stay tuned for the call to apply and secure your place in this pioneering program. Don’t miss your chance to be part of a movement that’s set to redefine education and technology in Africa.
