A Glimpse into the Future of Innovation: First AI and Data Science Webinar at PHU
By Francis Ogutu

This week, the Proposed Hekima University (PHU) took a major step forward by hosting a highly anticipated two-day webinar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science. Held on October 22nd and 23rd, 2024, the event attracted an enthusiastic group of participants eager to explore the transformative potential of these fields. Starting promptly at 8:00 AM each day, the sessions provided an introduction to AI and Data Science while positioning PHU as a forward-thinking leader in innovative education.

Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, SJ, the proposed Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, opened the webinar with a compelling address, emphasizing the vital role AI and Data Science play in shaping the future. He outlined PHU’s mission to lead in these critical areas, setting the stage for two days of stimulating presentations from renowned international experts.

The first session was delivered by Prof. Tad Gonsalves, SJ from Sophia University, who captivated participants with an engaging historical overview of AI. He explored AI’s evolution, real-world applications, and the ethical considerations surrounding its use. In an exclusive highlight, participants were privileged to witness some of the cutting-edge AI projects Prof. Gonsalves and his students are working on in his Tokyo lab, including a demonstration of a self-driven car currently in its development phase. This live Zoom demonstration offered participants a rare glimpse into the future of AI technology.

Following Prof. Gonsalves, Dr. S. Wenisch, SJ from Loyola College India took participants through the practical applications of Data Science in today’s world, focusing on how data-driven decision-making is reshaping industries and society. His presentation gave participants a fresh perspective on the power of data and its potential to drive innovation.

Prof. Nazarius Tumwisigye from Makerere University concluded the first day with a session on how modern Data Science differs from traditional statistical methods. He demonstrated how advanced data techniques are providing more robust insights for businesses, organizations and nations worldwide.

Day two continued with Prof. Nazarius, who discussed the importance of Data Cleaning and Preparation in ensuring data accuracy. This was followed by Dr. Teresa Abuya from Kisii University, who introduced participants to data exploration techniques and the use of programming languages like Python for efficient data management.

The event reached its pinnacle with Mr. Alexander Huller, a Data Science trainer and consultant, who introduced cutting-edge AI tools such as ChatGPT and Julius AI. His presentation showcased how these tools are revolutionizing data management and sparking new opportunities in AI.

While this webinar was an introduction to AI and Data Science, it laid the foundation for deeper learning. PHU is pleased to announce that a comprehensive certificate course in AI and Data Science is scheduled for early 2025, where participants will gain advanced knowledge and practical skills in these dynamic fields. The event highlights PHU’s growing role as a leader in AI and Data Science education. Participants left excited for the upcoming certificate course, eager to expand their skills and be part of the next wave of technological innovation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to join this journey—PHU is ready to lead the future of AI and Data Science education. Be part of the next cohort in 2025!
