Diaconate Ordination of Ayele Shalamo Gobena, SJ In Rome-Italy

By Beatus Shayo, SJ

As we continue to celebrate this sacred season of hope and renewal, I am delighted to share a joyous occasion that has brought much happiness to our hearts.

On the 22nd April, 2025, the diaconate ordination of AYELE SHALAMO GOBENA SJ and his fifteen companions took place at the beautiful Chiesa del Gesù in Rome.

The ceremony was filled with grace, marked by the sacredness of the Mass presided over by His Excellency Bishop Antuan Ilgit, SJ. Many gathered from various parts of the world, including our dear Jesuit community, to witness this significant milestone in the lives of these young men committed to their vocation.

The bishop delivered a wonderful homily that resonated deeply with all present. He emphasized the profound commitment to the Mission that each deacon is called to embrace. The bishop’s words served as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities that come with this sacred vocation, inspiring those ordained and affirming the support of the priestly and lay communities surrounding them.

The ordination was further honored by the presence of Rev. Fr. Arturo Sosa SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, and His Eminence Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ, along with numerous Jesuits and other priests, who joined in concelebration, enriching the liturgy with their prayerful participation. The collective spirit of joy and solemnity filled the space as the newly ordained deacons were commissioned to serve the Church and its community.

After The Holy Mass

Following the Mass, we all gathered for a delightful meal that offered a chance for fellowship and celebration. The atmosphere was lively, filled with laughter, embraces, and heartfelt congratulations. It was a perfect opportunity for the deacons to share their experiences and express their gratitude to their mentors, friends, and families who have supported them throughout their journey. We had more opportunities to break bread together, celebrating not just the ordination but the community that nourishes our shared faith. It was a pleasure to witness everyone coming together in such a wonderful spirit of unity.

A Special Dinner in Honor of the Deacon

On the following day, our AOR Jesuit community in Rome hosted a special dinner in honor of Ayele. It was a warm gathering filled with wise words, blessings, and good wishes as we congratulated him on this incredible step in his vocation. Sharing stories, laughter, and memories made the evening even more meaningful as we expressed our support for him and his new role.

As Ayele embarks on this journey, let us keep him and all the newly ordained deacons in our prayers. May they continue to grow in their faith and dedication, serving those in need and spreading the light of Christ in every corner of the world. AMEN
