Nyumbani Village

By Fr. Silas Kemboi, SJ

I have always been a bit confused whenever a fellow Jesuit from the Ukambani counties told me that his home is in Machakos, Makueni, or Kitui. Geographically, I struggled to clearly distinguish between these places. However, a recent visit to Kitui has helped me better understand the region’s layout.

I travelled to Kitui to give a seminar on the Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable Adults to the staff of Nyumbani Children’s Home. I had previously heard about Nyumbani’s unique village-style setup, and although I stayed there for just one night, I was able to get a small feel of the place.

The seminar went very well. It was attended by nearly 100 staff members, both teaching and non-teaching. I will let the photos speak for themselves. I am especially grateful to Abba Pascal Mwijage, SJ, Mr. Anthony (the program’s manager), and Mr. Fredrick, who kindly drove me to and from Kitui.
