One-Day Workshop at Subiaco Retreat Centre, Karen
By Fr. Silas Kemboi, SJ
On Sunday, the 25th, the province’s Safeguarding and Protection Office had the privilege of conducting a one-day workshop for the Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya (AOSK) at the Subiaco Retreat Centre in Karen, Nairobi. AOSK, in collaboration with Catholic Care for Children in Kenya (CCCK), brought together 48 sisters from various parts of the country who serve as safeguarding officers for an eight-day training workshop on the safeguarding and protection of children and vulnerable adults.
Our team, comprising Fr. Bina, Ms. Nafisa, and myself, was invited to provide insights on the Canon Law and the safeguarding and protection of children and vulnerable adults, types of abuse, their indicators, and the impact of abuse on these groups.
The session was highly engaging, with the sisters actively participating. They asked thoughtful questions, shared concrete scenarios, and provided examples, making the session truly interactive. As a newcomer to the team, it was a valuable learning experience, and I was pleased to see the many potential avenues for collaboration.
I am particularly encouraged by the Church’s commitment, especially among the sisters who are often deeply involved at the grassroots level.
We look forward to further collaboration with both the sisters and other organizations that share our goal of creating safe spaces for all, particularly children and vulnerable adults.
