Take a Photo Challenge
By Fr. Silas Kemboi, SJ
This week marks my third week in Molo. As you may know, the Franciscan brothers are hosting us, and our Paul Miki Jesuit community is located within their Baraka Agricultural College premises.
As part of our orientation, we’ve been visiting the surrounding religious communities. As the saying goes, “charity begins at home,” our first visits were to the Franciscan brothers nearby. In addition to the college, we visited their three communities: The Novitiate, the College House (for those working in the college), and the Generalate.
What struck me most—perhaps because of my new role as Safeguarding Assistant—was the fact that each house, and even the college, had their Safeguarding Policy Statement visibly displayed at the entrance. I was even more impressed to see the same policy statement at their small shopping post outside the gate.
This prompted me to reflect: How many of our Jesuit houses and apostolates have their Safeguarding Policy Statements publicly displayed? The first time I noticed our Province’s Safeguarding Policy Statement was when I visited our Development Office in Kangemi. I’m sure most of our apostolates have them, and perhaps I have never paid much attention.
If you are reading this and currently living or/and working within Eastern Africa, please help me/us know: Take a photo of the Safeguarding Policy Statement in your community or apostolate.
When submitting your photo, include the following details as a caption:
- Name of the person submitting
- Name of the apostolate/community
- Location where the policy is displayed
- Whether the statement includes the name and contact information of the local safeguarding officer
Submit to skemboi@aorjesuits.org.
A generous gift awaits the first five submissions, and the photos will be featured in next week’s news update!
