The Fire That Kindles Other Fires - The encounters at Sophia University - Japan & IAJU
By John Francis Mukulu, SJ
This month, at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. We had the grace of hosting The International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU). A profound moment of encounter, reflection, and inspiration. Bringing together Jesuit university leaders from around the world. The gathering renewed the sense of commitment to our shared mission of faith and service not just to participants but also to me. A renewal of our call to be “fires that kindle other fires” in the world. A to set the world ablaze with faith, knowledge, and purpose

These moments were not just intellectual but also spiritual. It was a time to remind ourselves of the call of the King from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, to labor tirelessly for the greater glory of God and the service of others. It was a space to explore how Jesuit higher education can continue forming individuals who are not only competent but also compassionate, courageous, and committed to justice.
During this transformative experience, I had the privilege of meeting Fr. John Rose, SJ, a great Jesuit from Xavier University who embodies the spirit of setting other hearts aflame. It is in these encounters where we learn that even when the mission is challenging us, Jesuits must be the light that guides others forward.

Beyond the conference, I also had the grace to visit several Jesuit apostolates in Tokyo. This opportunity allowed me to witness firsthand the perseverance and commitment of Jesuits who have dedicated their lives to the mission in Japan. Their presence is a testament to the enduring power of Ignatian spirituality, a living response to Christ’s call to serve wherever the need is greatest. May the Lord continue to bless these initiatives and send more laborers into His vineyard.
