Report On the Finance, Governance, Risk Management and Statutory Compliance Workshop

The Finance, Governance, Risk Management and Statutory Compliance Workshop, organized for finance personnel and accountants serving Jesuit institutions in Tanzania, was successfully conducted in Dodoma from 7th to 10th September 2026.
The four day workshop was organized by the AOR Treasury Team based in Nairobi, and was directly supervised by Fr. Mark, the Assistant Treasurer, working together with the on-site and local coordinator, Sch. Kavishe Waweru. The training brought together the finance and procurement personnel with the aim of strengthening financial management, governance, compliance, accountability, and risk management within Jesuit institutions in Tanzania.
The workshop was successfully conducted and received very positively by the participants. The quality of facilitation was of a high professional standard, with experienced and knowledgeable facilitators guiding the participants through the different areas of financial management and statutory compliance.
A particularly important aspect of the workshop was the involvement of facilitators and experts from relevant government offices and statutory bodies. These resource persons were well informed and accredited to offer training in their respective areas of expertise. Their participation ensured that the sessions were practical, relevant, and responsive to the current legal, financial, and statutory requirements affecting institutions in Tanzania.
The workshop covered several important areas, including Financial Management and Internal Controls; Tax Compliance and Risk Mitigation; Financial Reporting and Statutory Obligations; and Strategic Planning and Sustainability. The training methodology combined presentations, question-and-answer sessions, case studies, practical exercises, group discussions, and plenary reflections.
One of the major benefits of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to receive updated information on the many compliance requirements and statutory obligations that institutions are expected to meet. The financial and regulatory environment continues to change, and institutions are required to remain informed about new developments, updates, and emerging compliance requirements.
For Jesuit institutions, maintaining proper financial systems and ensuring compliance with government regulations and statutory bodies is essential not only for legal and institutional accountability, but also for the responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to us. Having finance personnel who are informed, updated, and adequately equipped is therefore an important investment in improving the quality of service offered across our institutions.
The workshop also provided practical outputs and action points, including the identification of priority internal control gaps, tax compliance and risk mitigation measures, financial closing and reconciliation checklists, and institutional action plans for the period ahead.
Overall, the workshop was a great success. It provided a valuable opportunity for finance officers and accountants from Jesuit institutions in Tanzania to learn, share experiences, ask questions, and receive professional guidance from qualified facilitators and relevant government experts.
The Treasury Team in Nairobi, under the direct supervision of Fr. Mark, and Sch. Kavishe Waweru, deserves sincere appreciation for organizing and coordinating this important initiative. The workshop has contributed significantly to strengthening the capacity of the finance and procurement personnel and enhancing the quality of financial management, governance, accountability, and statutory compliance within Jesuit institutions in Tanzania. It also offered an opportunity to share experiences and networking opportunities between the different institutions in Tanzania.
As institutions continue to respond to changing government regulations and compliance requirements, such capacity-building programmes remain essential. It is hoped that the knowledge, skills, updates, and practical recommendations gained during the workshop will be effectively implemented within the respective institutions, leading to improved systems, stronger accountability, and better service to the mission of the Society of Jesus in Tanzania.
