Imagine 2050

By Ms. Teresia Muia

What if the next big innovation began with a young person noticing a problem and daring to imagine a different future?

This question shaped a virtual ideation session hosted by the Loyola Center for Media and Communications (LCMC) on 21 and 22 October 2026, bringing together about 30 young people to imagine the world in 2050 and explore what they could invent to improve lives.

Guided by the LCMC team, the participants were introduced to the 2050 Innovation Challenge, explored the stories of innovators, examined problems in today’s world, and reflected on how seemingly ordinary observations can inspire extraordinary ideas.

The session encouraged the young people to move beyond admiring what others have achieved and begin asking their own questions: What problems do we see around us? What solutions are missing? And what could we create today that would make life better in 2050?

A key message from the session was that innovation begins with curiosity, imagination and the courage to experiment:

“Any innovation was once a crazy idea that began with noticing what was happening at the moment, questioning realities, imagining new possibilities and trying them out. It could be a big and bold idea, smart and complicated, or simple but useful. What matters is the willingness to imagine, the determination to try, and the belief that we can all create something. That is the heart of innovation.”
