Speak Up, Stand Out!

By Sr. Santrina Raymond, IBVM

Recognizing the pivotal role that public speaking plays in shaping perceptions, influencing stakeholders, and driving organizational success, the Catholic Care for the Children (CCC) received a comprehensive training for key communication staff. The primary goal was to equip participants with the essential tools and techniques to enhance their public speaking proficiency.

The training adopted a multifaceted approach, blending theoretical insights with hands-on practical sessions. Dr. Elias Mokua, SJ, renowned for his prowess in public speaking, conducted very interactive sessions, providing real-world examples and personalized feedback. The sessions encompassed input on speech structure, vocal modulation, audience engagement, and the psychology of effective communication. All this aimed at delving into the art of persuasion, helping participants to craft compelling messages and deliver them with conviction. Participants were also guided to master non-verbal cues such as body language, tone, and gestures to amplify the impact of their spoken words. Addressing stage fright and building confidence were key components of the training, enabling participants to face diverse audiences with assurance. Participants were also encouraged to deliver speeches on topics relevant to their roles, fostering a supportive environment for peer learning. Overcoming stage fright and building confidence emerged as a significant outcome, with participants demonstrating a newfound poise in high-pressure speaking situations such as investigative interviews. Additionally, video recordings and playback sessions allowed for constructive self-assessment and refinement.

Post-training evaluations and feedback indicated a high level of satisfaction among participants, with many expressing gratitude for the practical and insightful nature of the training.
