The Jesuit of Eastern Africa Province dream of establishing the first Jesuit university in the region has been evolving from concept to the implementation where these schools are being activated through short courses. In September of 2023, the proposed Hekima University (PHU) launched its first professional Certificate in Data Science short course and the training is currently ongoing.

Amidst the hum of innovation, there exist a unique hub for aspiring data scientists. Here, the participants from diverse professional backgrounds have united under the banner of a professional certificate program in data science. The participants are being trained through a project-based approach, and they selected projects in areas they are passionate about under the guidance of an expert facilitator. They are learning data science by building out on their projects.

The one-week long training ended up being the vital lifeblood. Their journey is not one of mere study but of immersive participation, where theory met practice. The foundation of participants efforts is anchored on continuous support being accorded to them, and collaborative ideas sparked off at group meetings. Here, amidst the focused attention of mentors, barriers are broken down and constructive criticism is running like a soft stream, fostering development.

Among the data science procedures, participants manage to regain their balance. Some are using regression analysis as a compass to help them navigate the confusing web of trends and patterns. Others are using natural language processing as their interpreter, deciphering the cryptic messages hidden within textual data. While others working with Time Series Analysis, like a clockmaker’s precision, to unravel the mysteries of chronological data, thus revealing the heartbeat of change.

Each participant is finding their place in this busy hub of activity, and their project serve as a tribute to their commitment and the supportive environment of the program. As the world surge forward on the waves of data, these aspiring data scientists stand at the helm, steering towards a future shaped by insight and innovation.

The participants will be presenting their final projects and concepts during a graduation ceremony on the Friday, 26th April 2024, where they will also be receiving certificates.
