In October 2023, a group of aspiring data scientists embarked on a transformative journey at Hekima University’s College, attending the Professional Certificate Program in Data Science offered by the proposed Hekima University (pHU) in partnership with the college. The program provided a unique blend of physical and virtual learning experiences, shaping participants like Elias and Ann into skilled professionals.

Elias, reflecting on his experience, highlighted, “Through a physical training week, I gained foundational insights into data collection, analysis, and visualization, refining my skills.” The program began with intensive in-person sessions and virtual for a few other participants, laying the groundwork for their data science education. The participants immersed themselves in the intricacies of data, honing their abilities and understanding the core principles of the field.

The orientation week, spanning from 2nd to 8th October, served as the Launchpad as participants delved into a curriculum that emphasized not just theoretical knowledge but also it’s direct application in real-world scenarios. As the program transitioned to the virtual realm, participants like Ann valued the continuous guidance, stating, “In-person sessions honed my skills, deepening my understanding. Faculty guidance was and still is priceless.” The virtual training expanded their horizons, delving into advanced data modelling techniques. This shift emphasized the adaptability and depth of their knowledge, transforming them into data science adept.

Elias aptly summarized the experience, stating, “This holistic experience highlights the synergy between theory and practical application.” The journey will reach its zenith with a two-day on-site engagement next year with a high-level data science conference on 26th April 2024, where participants will showcase their achievements and the real-world impact of their work. On April 27th, a graduation ceremony and an exhibition highlighting the capstone projects of the graduating students, underlining the culmination of their dedication and new-found expertise.

The program’s success lies in its ability to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical implementation, demonstrating that data science is not merely about numbers but about solving tangible, real-world problems. Through this comprehensive approach, participants emerge not just as data scientists but as problem solvers, ready to make a meaningful impact on the world.
