Drought Mitigation in Mutomo by the Jesuit Devt Office

Having successfully completed the food distribution exercise in August and September this year among selected communities in Mutomo who were badly hit by the raging drought spell, the Jesuit Development Office then embarked on training the beneficiaries on sustainable livelihoods and smart agriculture practices particularly on kitchen gardening, Zai pits establishment, designing moist beds, sunken beds and raised beds.

They were two days [Oct 17th and 18th] of intensive practical training done to 99 participants from selected villages in Mutomo Sub County, Kitui Couty.

The joyful participants – mainly mothers – were able to try out for themselves on the spot some of the farming technics taught to them by professional sub-county agricultural officers. We hope that the next dry season will get them better armed with food security.

In the same optic, we later witnessed a successful day of tree planting that was conducted at St Patrick’s Secondary School, Mutomo Sub County on the 19th October, 2023.

This was a ceremony well attended and appreciated by the students and staff together with several dignitaries from the county government, among others, the Assistant County Commissioner, Forester Officer, Area Chief, Officer Commanding Station, Kenya Wildlife Service, Officer in Charge of Prisons, etc, who graced it with their presence.

A call was made to work towards the realisation of the Presidential Directive of planting 15 billion trees in the country by the year 2032. On the sidelines, each of the 172 students received a gift hamper of toiletries, which to them was a peek preview of the coming Christmas holidays.

And what a way to end the tree-planting ceremony with heavy rain showers!
